Suli vrij van plastic!

Wij zijn Jozua Suitela en de familie Daniel & Shari Suitela-Lainsamputty. We hebben zes maanden op de Molukken gewoond, waar plastic afval een groot probleem is. Het ligt overal: op straat, langs de kust, in de zee en tussen de huizen.

Wij wilden graag iets doen om te helpen, vooral in het dorp Suli op het eiland Ambon. Daarom bedachten we een opruimactie langs het strand. In oktober 2024 haalden we samen met de Sulinese gemeenschap maar liefst 2200 kilo plastic van het strand.

Maar één opruimactie was niet genoeg. We organiseerden meerdere acties en gingen op zoek naar een duurzame oplossing. Omdat er geen vuilnisbakken waren en geen personeel om afval op te halen, gooiden mensen het vaak weer op de grond. Dankzij een crowdfunding konden we kliko’s kopen en een systeem opzetten waardoor het afval nu elke twee weken wordt opgehaald. Dit systeem loopt inmiddels al anderhalf jaar.

Om hiermee door te gaan is elke donatie welkom. Zo kunnen we het systeem voortzetten en uitbreiden en het verschil blijven maken. Zo maken we Suli schoner en kunnen we een voorbeeld zijn voor andere dorpen op de Molukken.

Suli free of plastic!

We are Jozua Suitela and family Daniel & Shari Suitela-Lainsamputty. Of the in total 6 months, we’re already staying about 2 months in the village Suli in the Moluccas. This is the village our family comes from.

Plastic waste is a major problem in the Moluccas. It forms a big part of the street scene. Along the coast, in the sea and between the houses... wherever you look, you’ll find plastic.

We would like to contribute on a small scale and come up with solutions. A few weeks ago we came up with the idea to start a clean-up campaign on the coast of Suli. On Saturday October the 19th, together with the community of Suli, we picked up a lot of plastic from the beach. 2200 kilos to be precise. 

However, 1 clean-up campaign is not enough. More actions and structural solutions are needed. Since there are no garbage cans on the beach and there is no pick-up service, people will be tempted to throw plastic on the ground. With support from the Netherlands, we would like to buy wheelie bins and set up a system that ensures that the garbage will be taken to the garbage dump.
