One installment keeps a healthcare researcher in Netherlands
Collapse of the rial has wiped out the savings that covered my tuition. I need to pay my first installment and stay enrolled.

My name is Kamyab Karimi. I am 30 years old, and I live in Enschede, where I study for an MSc in Business Information Technology at the University of Twente. I expect to graduate in 2028. My research sits where machine learning meets healthcare, and I have published four peer-reviewed papers. Alongside my studies I work as a student assistant on an NWO-funded research project at the university.
As a student from outside the EU I pay the institutional tuition fee of €19,150 per year. My plan for covering it was straightforward. My family and I saved for it over years. Those savings are held in rials, and over the past year the rial has lost a large part of its value against the euro due to the war. The money still exists. It simply buys far fewer euros than it did when I planned this degree. A sum that once covered a full year of tuition now covers only part of it.
The university has dealt with me correctly and I want to be equally correct on this page. When I explained my situation, the arrangement open to me was to spread the €19,150 over five installments. I accepted it. The first collection date is 30 September, for €3,830.
If that first collection fails, my enrolment ends. My residence permit depends on that enrolment, so losing one means losing the other, and I would have to leave the Netherlands with the degree unfinished.
Here is what I have already done before asking anyone else. I work 16 hours a week as a student assistant, which pays my rent and daily costs. I have cut my spending down to essentials. I asked the university about every option available to me, and the installment plan is the result of that. What I cannot do from Netherlands is reverse a currency collapse.
So, I need €3,830 by 30 September to pay the first installment and stay enrolled. Every euro raised goes to that payment, and I will publish proof of the payment once it is made. Everyone who contributes will receive progress updates. Beyond that, you have my commitment to pass this help on once I am in a position to give rather than ask.
I came to Netherlands to work on AI for healthcare. After graduation I want to work on systems that help clinicians make better decisions and improve outcomes for patients. That is what I want this degree for, and that is the work I intend to give back with.
