Wat eraan voorafging
Begin 2024 kreeg Carlton te horen dat hij ongeneselijk ziek is. Na de eerste schok kwam al snel het besef dat hij zijn grote droom nu waar moest maken, geen tijd te verliezen. Die droom is het oversteken van de oceaan met zijn eigen zeilboot. Dankzij de steun van heel veel lieve en gulle mensen is het hem gelukt, tussen zijn werk en de behandelingen door, zijn boot zeewaardig te maken. Eind 2025 is hij vertrokken, maar de voorbereidingen hadden zoveel tijd gekost dat het eigenlijk te laat was om de Atlantische oversteek te kunnen maken.
Dat kan maar een bepaalde tijd in het jaar omdat je afhankelijk bent van de juiste wind en stroming.
De reis was uitdagend, met kou, storm en wat technische problemen en strandde in Bretagne. Maar het is niet voor niets geweest. Het was een goede testvaart waarin Carlton zijn boot, de Mad Science, door en door heeft leren kennen. In zijn eentje is hij vanuit Frankrijk teruggevaren naar Nederland. Daar moest hij eerst naar het ziekenhuis voor nieuwe behandelingen, maar zijn droom heeft hij niet opgegeven, dus nu is het tijd voor Dead Man Sailing deel 2, dit keer hopelijk in korte broek. Als zijn gezondheid het toestaat vertrekt hij met zijn bemanning begin augustus voor deel 1 van de reis, naar Gran Canaria. Hij zou dan ruim op tijd moeten zijn om hier het juiste moment af te wachten voor de Atlantische oversteek naar Santa Lucia.
En hier komt ie: zeilen is nog steeds ‘the most expensive way to get somewhere for free.’ Denk bijvoorbeeld aan havengeld, tickets om vanuit Gran Canaria terug te vliegen naar Nederland voor medische check ups en behandeling. En abonnementen voor satelliet en navigatie/ communicatie middelen. Alle hulp is dus welkom, vandaar deze nieuwe actie.
Heel veel dank aan iedereen die mee wil helpen om Carltons droom waar te maken. En mocht het niet lukken, dan verkoopt hij toch gewoon de boot….
Dead man sailing part 2
What preceded it
In early 2024, Carlton was told that he is terminally ill. After the first shock, the realization soon came that he had to make his big dream come true, not to waste any time. That dream is to cross the ocean with his own sailboat. Thanks to the support of many sweet and generous people, he managed to make his boat seaworthy between work and the treatments. At the end of 2025 he left Vlissingen, but the preparations had taken so long that it was actually too late to make the Atlantic crossing. This is only possible at a certain time in the year because you are dependent on the right wind and current.
The journey was challenging, with cold, storm and some technical problems and stranded in Brittany, France. But it was not for nothing. It was a good test run in which Carlton got to know his boat, the Mad Science, through and through. On his own he sailed back to the Netherlands from France. There he first had to go to the hospital for new treatments, but he did not give up his dream, so now it is time for Dead Man Sailing part 2, hopefully this time in shorts. If his health permits, he will leave with his crew in early August for part 1 of the trip; to Gran Canaria. He would then have to be well in time to wait here for the right time for the Atlantic crossing to Saint Lucia.
And here it comes: sailing is still ‘the most expensive way to get somewhere for free.' Think for example of the mooring fees in the ports, tickets to fly back to the Netherlands from Gran Canaria for hospital treatment and subscriptions for satellite and communication equipment. All help is therefore welcome, hence this new action.
