I underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2019, and it soon became clear that something had gone terribly wrong. Now, after eleven surgeries and numerous complications, my remaining organs are slowly failing due to malnutrition. For years, I have had to rely on a liquid diet because I cannot tolerate solid food, and Dutch medical specialists can no longer help me. Medical techniques are more advanced in other countries—which offers hope, as I want to stay alive to see my child (11) grow up—but I am also under immense stress because my health insurer refuses to cover the costs, and the treatment is financially out of reach for me. Nevertheless, I want to use this platform to see if there are people who can support me in my recovery and help me believe in my dream again: to finally be the mother my daughter deserves, rather than a mother who is constantly ill and—if nothing changes—will eventually no longer be here at all.
