Basi's Battle: Join our dog's Road to Recovery
Help us offer Basilika the care she needs in order to treat her neurological condition.
EN: In the beginning of April 2023, our days became more joyful as Basi (Basilika) entered our lives. We adopted her through PetConnect from a shelter in Russia and from the very first days, with her calm and sweet personality, she conquered our hearts and became more than just a pet, she became a family member.
A few days ago, we had to rush to the hospital in the middle of the night, as she started having severe (epileptic) seizures. She spent two days in intensive care and now we are hoping that her situation will become stable, but she will need to stay hospitalised more for observation and different tests. Due to her seizures, she lost her vision (we hope, temporarily). The doctors have been doing their best, but to truly understand and treat her condition, an MRI of her brain is essential. This procedure, unfortunately, comes with a significant cost.
Until now, the cost for her hospitalisation has been 2300 EUR and the estimation of upcoming tests go beyond 1200 EUR.
We are determined to provide Basi with the best care possible. We've committed ourselves to be there for her, just as she has been there for us in our best and worst days. But now, we need your help. We're reaching out to our community, friends, and fellow animal lovers, asking for your support in helping Basi receive the necessary treatment she needs to recover. Every small contribution counts, and every donation brings us one step closer to bringing our beloved dog back to her joyful self.

Au début du mois d'avril 2023, nos journées sont devenues plus joyeuses lorsque Basi (Basilika) est entrée dans nos vies. Nous l'avons adoptée par l'intermédiaire de PetConnect dans un refuge en Russie et dès les premiers jours, avec sa personnalité calme et douce, elle a conquis nos cœurs et est devenue plus qu'un simple animal de compagnie, elle est devenue un membre de la famille.
Il y a quelques jours, nous avons dû nous précipiter à l'hôpital au milieu de la nuit, car elle a commencé à avoir de graves crises d'épilepsie. Elle a passé deux jours en soins intensifs et nous espérons maintenant que sa situation se stabilisera, mais elle devra rester hospitalisée plus longtemps pour être observée et subir différents tests. Ses crises d'épilepsie lui ont fait perdre la vue (temporairement, nous l'espérons). Les médecins ont fait de leur mieux, mais pour vraiment comprendre et traiter son état, une IRM de son cerveau est indispensable. Malheureusement, cette procédure a un coût important.
Jusqu'à présent, le cout d'hospitalisation en soins intensifs est de 2300 EUR et l'estimation des tests à venir depasse 1200 eur
Nous sommes déterminés à fournir à Basi les meilleurs soins possibles. Nous nous sommes engagés à être là pour elle, tout comme elle a été là pour nous dans nos meilleurs et nos pires jours. Mais maintenant, nous avons besoin de votre aide. Nous nous adressons à notre communauté, à nos amis et à tous ceux qui aiment les animaux, pour leur demander de nous aider à donner à Basilika les soins dont elle a besoin pour se rétablir. Begin april 2023 werden onze dagen vreugdevoller toen Basilika ons leven binnenkwam. We adopteerden haar via PetConnect uit een asiel in Rusland en vanaf de eerste dagen veroverde ze onze harten met haar kalme en lieve persoonlijkheid en werd ze meer dan alleen een huisdier, ze werd een gezinslid.
Een paar dagen geleden moesten we midden in de nacht met spoed naar het ziekenhuis, omdat ze ernstige epileptische aanvallen kreeg. Ze lag twee dagen op de intensive care en nu hopen we dat haar situatie stabiel wordt, maar ze zal langer in het ziekenhuis moeten blijven voor observatie en verschillende onderzoeken. Door haar aanvallen verloor ze haar gezichtsvermogen (hopelijk tijdelijk). De artsen hebben hun best gedaan, maar om haar toestand echt te begrijpen en te behandelen is een MRI van haar hersenen essentieel. Deze procedure brengt helaas aanzienlijke kosten met zich mee.
Tot nu toe is de schatting voor 48 uur ziekenhuisopname op de intensive care 1500 euro en de schatting voor komende tests ligt tussen de 1000 en 1200 euro.
We zijn vastbesloten om Basi de best mogelijke zorg te geven. We hebben ons voorgenomen om er voor haar te zijn, net zoals zij er voor ons is geweest in onze beste en slechtste dagen. Maar nu hebben we jullie hulp nodig. We richten ons tot onze gemeenschap, vrienden en andere dierenvrienden en vragen om uw steun om Basi de behandeling te geven die ze nodig heeft om te herstellen. Elke kleine bijdrage telt en elke donatie brengt ons een stap dichter bij de terugkeer van onze geliefde hond naar haar vrolijke zelf.

Dear friends,
At this start of a new year, we wanted to give you an update on Basi’s situation.
Since early November, the vets at the Veterinary University Clinic in Ghent have been performing various types of tests on her (CT, echos, taking blood directly from her artery, etc), in order to try to find a reason for her blood condition. As they couldn’t find yet a specific reason, they diagnosed her with primary polycythemia vera, meaning that the reason for her abnormally high production of red blood cells (RBCs) comes from a disfunction of her bone marrow. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition, the only thing that can be done is treat the ‘symptoms’ with a drug that inhibits the production of her RBCs, similar to cytostatic drugs. She has taken it for 1 month, now it’s been one month without. On the positive side, this has worked very well for her until now, her quality of life has been normal, without any visible side effects. However, the vets said that unfortunately it is not a sustainable solution on the long term.
At this moment, we are taking blood samples every 10 days in order to figure out the perfect dose of medicine and the exact time interval at which this should be given, in order to put as little charge as possible on her body. It hasn’t been easy for her but she has been extremely brave and has put a smile on our faces every single day with her sweet personality and wagging tail. She is a blessing in our lives and we are going to be there for her all the way.

?? We would like to start by thanking you from the bottom of our hearts, for all the support you have offered us throughout these difficult days.
Each day we visited Basi at the hospital, we made sure to let her know how many people love her, how everyone is sending her lots of force in this challenging fight.
Since Monday, Basi is back at home, as the doctors managed to stabilise her condition, but unfortunately we do not have yet a clear diagnosis. She is continuing her recovery at home, with lots of medication, as we wait for the appointment with the neurologist next week. She still presents neurological after affects (vision trouble, lack of body coordination, anxiety and confusion) but hopefully these will improve in the next days.
Unfortunately, her blood tests continue to be worrying, with a very high number of red blood cells, which could be the cause of her seizures, instead of an actual epileptic condition.
On the bright side, we have seen an improvement in her physical condition in the last days, she has been eating well and drinking lots of water.Next steps: we will see a specialist in neurology on 8 November at the reputed Veterinary University Clinic in Ghent, which hopefully will be able to perform as soon as possible an MRI, in order to understand if her seizures and high number of red blood cells is due to a tumor or not.
We pray that this will not be the case and she will be able to quickly recover with the amount of love and care she is receiving from all of us.
