Excuse my French, maar de jetlag (+8u) was even zwaar shit.

Links rijden gaat prima.

We waren erdoor ontroerd.

    The journey
We had a very good trip. As if we had an angel by our side, we had a whole seating row just for the two of us on the longest flight. I've been able to hang, lay over mum without having to sit for long periods. We were even able both to get some sleep every now and then.

At Schiphol Airport I thought I saw a familiar face, and a little later she was also in our boarding queue. After a chat, it turned out to be a neighbor of mine (with her son), who actually sat 4 rows in front of us on our flight to Dubai. Very coincidental. And then on top of that it turned out that 2 rows in front of us was an old boarding schoolmate of mom, from 45 years ago! Small world.

    Landing
We are staying in a beautiful green area, close to the Pacific Ocean. The Airbnb is a wonderfully quiet place to stay, with lots of bird sounds.

Excuse my French, but the jet lag (+8 hours) was just horrible. Where I never had any problems with time zones before, I now notice that my system goes crazy when there are changes and no rhythm. Fortunately, just at the last minute before the first day of treatment, I slept through the night.

Driving on the left is going well. I did laugh heartily at my mother who, in front of the barrier of a parking deck, automatically sorting the car all the way to the left, while the ticket machine was of course on the right.

    The Neurophysics method
_ I had heard many stories about the professionalism and empathy of Nickie and Ken Ware, so expectations were already quite high, but the first two weeks really exceeded everything. What a loving, very skilled practitioners these are. We also have short, pleasant contacts with other Dutch people who are undergoing treatment here (for e.g. ALS, CFS/ME), who are having appointments before and after me.
_We do exercises on fitness equipment with extremely low weights, and I have to execute very smooth movements. Every mm counts. Where things do not flow smoothly, sometimes even very stuttering, there is still work to be done for the nervous system. This is not about strength, but about a collaboration between brain and body.
Through repetitive movements, the nervous system is reminded of the 'normal' way of responding to stimuli and ‘pressure’. Sometimes vibrations come from the body. At that point the body/nervous system is calibrating itself. Sometimes this triggers waves of emotions. Nickie indicates that I don't have to rationalize or explain those moments. It can just be there for a while, without knowing where it came from.
_ All exercises are being performed with eyes closed, so that the visual system cannot interfere with the information between brain and body.
_It is almost impossible to explain in words what exactly they do here. Fortunately, a good documentary has been made: Calibrate (you can watch/purchase it here https://calibrate.global/)
_After the first day, mum and I were both worried about how things would go when she goes back to the Netherlands after the first 3 weeks. Then it really is me, myself and I here and it is very intense. But in Dutch we say; ‘when time comes, the solution will arrive’ . Also we just heard that my aunt from Melbourne will come over for a few days next week.
_ My mum makes videos of every exercise on every new device, so that I can use Nickie's instructions again when I return to the Netherlands.
_ I had heard from 'fellow sufferers' about sleeping in the afternoon after the 2.5 hours of therapy, but to be honest I secretly thought that that might not apply to me. Because I normally have a lot of trouble sleeping and lack of energy is not my biggest problem (like others with ME have). But of course, also for me there was no way around it. In the first week I slept like a baby after lunch when we came back from a session. And at night I add another 8 to 9 hours to that with relative ease. The focus is therefore completely on the treatment during the week, and we did not make it any further than the local supermarket and the park around the corner in the first week. It's absolutely fine, the focus is clear, and the body requires recovery and rest after the 'stress' of the exercises. That's what I came for.

    Progress
Nickie is happy that we have the time to work together, because my nervous system shows a lot of complexity. It reacts quite extreme to very small (physical) loads.

We worked on 'program 1' for the first two weeks so that my body could perform more and more repetitions of the same slowed down movement. On day 1, I couldn't complete one full movement on most machines without all kinds of hiccups, including spasms in my face and jaw. While on day 4 I was already able to do 3 smooth repetitions. We then deliberately do not continue with another repetition, but to stop right at the moment when the system is not yet overwhelmed. It is all about creating a framework to remind the nervous system how it should actually function when it is stressed or confronted with stimuli. I can't say much about the feeling and pain yet, but it is clear that tension has already been released around my mouth and jaws. During week 2 we continued to do the same exercises, adding new exercise machines every now and then.

Ultimately, cleaning and calibrating the nervous system and the brain should lead to the pain occasionally disappearing for a short time or starting to jump, and in the longer term disappear more often and for longer.

Because you as donors have been so generous and mom and dad have also donated a significant amount, I can extend my stay from 6 to 8 weeks(!). I am very grateful that I can still train under Nickie's wings for the extra time being.

Every day that we drive to the facility, I am carried by your wishes for me to get well, thank you. That remains a very special feeling!

On Fridays I don't have Neurophysics and that's when our weekend starts. Nickie’s recommendation: a lot of rest and sleep, a bit of nature, little screen time and a lot of relaxation. Yesterday ('King's Day') we visited a lunch spot that 'fellow sufferers' had recommended to us and by chance we started talking to the table next to us. A sweet couple from Brisbane, who wanted to pray for me after hearing my story. We were moved and touched by it.

Love from us and thank you for all the prayers, moral support and love from a distance.

    Gerda and Carmen

    Lieve mensen,

    Liefs,
    Joleen
